Club Brugge's search for a veteran keeper amid Mignolet exit

Club Brugge have launched a search for a new first‑choice goalkeeper following Simon Mignolet’s retirement. The Belgian side have shortlisted four experienced options – Matz Sels, Koen Casteels, Yann Sommer and Mathew Ryan – as they plan a short‑term solution before promoting Argus Vanden Driessche.

Simon Mignolet stopped as goalkeeper at Club Brugge after the last season and decided to hang up his gloves. His departure prompted the blue‑black club to begin looking for a successor.

The four names mentioned – Sels, Casteels, Sommer and Ryan – were the first cited options. Later, Yann Sommer and Mathew Ryan were added to the list, giving Club Brugge four viable alternatives.

Nottingham Forest indicated they want to keep Matz Sels longer, which effectively removes him from Brugge’s shortlist. Talk of a one‑year contract extension for Sels aims to keep other candidates at bay.

Koen Casteels has already signalled he does not wish to leave immediately, leaving Ryan and Sommer as the remaining transfer‑free possibilities. The club therefore retains two experienced options while evaluating the long‑term plan.

Club Brugge’s strategy is to secure an experienced keeper now and eventually hand the role to Argus Vanden Driessche, the future prospect they envision. A definitive decision on the new goalkeeper is expected in the coming days.
