World Cup

Courtois eyes fairytale exit as Red Devils target deeper run

Thibaut Courtois (34) is set to end his Belgium career after the World Cup, but insists he deserves a grander finale than a match against New Zealand. The goalkeeper, wearing a unique FIFA World Cup 2018 golden glove badge on his right sleeve, has underlined his elite status with crucial saves against Egypt and Iran. Courtois, who was named best goalkeeper at the 2018 World Cup, remains the only member of Belgium’s 'Fab Four' performing at this level in the United States. Vincent Mannaert, Belgium’s technical director, confirmed Courtois has never hinted at continuing beyond this tournament. “The chance I continue is smaller than the chance I stop,” Courtois stated. Belgium’s World Cup campaign hinges on Courtois, whose 17th World Cup appearance against Iran equalled Enzo Scifo’s national record. He has already surpassed Jan Ceulemans (16), Franky Van der Elst (15), and the duo of Jan Vertonghen and Eden Hazard (14). Courtois is on track to become Belgium’s all-time World Cup record holder in Vancouver. With eight clean sheets at World Cups, Courtois trails only Fabien Barthez and Peter Shilton (10 each). His next clean sheet would move him closer to their record. Belgium faces New Zealand in their final group match, a game that could define Courtois’ legacy if he secures a deeper run. Courtois, who has made 333 appearances for Real Madrid and kept 333 clean sheets in his career, has joked about his obsession with numbers. He has 58 clean sheets in 112 caps for Belgium, a ratio exceeding one in two matches. Mannaert will travel to Madrid after the tournament for a final discussion with Courtois, reflecting their mutual respect and shared admiration for Real Madrid. Their talks often include José Mourinho, recent signings like Cucurella and Konaté, and Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez. Courtois’ performance has overshadowed Belgium’s struggles, with the team yet to secure a victory in the group stage. His saves against Mehdi Taremi and Egypt’s Ashour highlight his enduring quality despite injury concerns in recent years. "Thibaut has with his experience a good view on things," Mannaert said before the tournament.
