Eljero Elia calls Argentina 'scary' backing England for World Cup

Former Dutch winger Eljero Elia, a 30‑cap Netherlands international, said today he is “anti‑Argentina” and finds the South American side “scary”, adding that he hopes England will advance to the World Cup final at Argentina’s expense. He made the comments during an appearance at Het Oranje Café, the popular Dutch football discussion platform.

Elia made clear he is not a fan of La Albiceleste. He said, “I am definitely anti‑Argentina. Just personally, they are scary. I don’t like them,” and noted that his aversion has nothing to do with the heated Netherlands‑Argentina clash at the 2022 World Cup.

The former winger also praised Lionel Messi, stating, “I always say that Messi is a gift from God, he was placed on this world to dominate football and do things other people cannot.”

Elia acknowledged Argentina’s footballing identity but remained critical, saying, “Okay, Argentina has an identity, but it is always so annoying. Scary, I just don’t like it.”

He added that while Argentina can play beautifully at times, he is bothered by their constant complaining: “That is football nowadays. It belongs, but I don’t like it. Just go play football, man.”

Argentina and England meet on Wednesday evening in the World Cup semi‑final at the Mercedes‑Benz Arena in Atlanta, with kickoff at 21:00 CET. The winner will face Spain on Sunday for the world title.
