Espart’s U19 surge puts Barcelona midfield vacancy on the line

🇪🇸

Xavi Espart is using the Spain U19 European Championship to demonstrate his midfield abilities, scoring and helping the side reach the semi‑finals, while Barcelona face a midfield vacancy after Marc Casado may be sold. His performances aim to convince Hansi Flick that his future at the club should extend beyond the right‑back role.

Barcelona have been focusing on first‑team sales this summer, and former Barça Atletic captain Marc Casado has fallen down the pecking order under Hansi Flick, making his exit the most logical solution for all parties involved.

Espart, a La Masia graduate, has been playing as a pivot for Spain U19, starting matches against Wales and Denmark and scoring in a 7‑0 win over Wales. He later came off the bench at half‑time in Spain’s 4‑0 victory over Germany, totalling 199 minutes in the tournament. The side is coached by Paco Gallardo.

At club level Espart has often been deployed as a right‑back, first by Juliano Belletti and later by Hansi Flick, but his performances in midfield for Spain show his comfort in that role. He has shown the ability to start attacks, choose the right pass and add personality to the build‑up.

Spain’s group stage produced fourteen goals without conceding, underscoring the team’s control, with Espart contributing to that balance. A photo by Alex Caparros captures Espart’s on‑field presence. His versatility offers Barcelona a player who can operate in both full‑back and midfield positions, valuable for Flick’s system.

The upcoming semi‑final will test Espart further; a strong showing could strengthen his case for a first‑team berth. The real litmus test will come during pre‑season when he links up with Flick’s squad and aims to impress the German tactician.
