European rivals watch as Sunderland chase Matias Galarza

🇬🇧

Sunderland are in the race to sign 24‑year‑old River Plate midfielder Matias Galarza, despite interest from Olympiacos, Getafe, Monza and Strasbourg. His contract runs until the end of 2028, meaning the Black Cats may not secure him cheaply this summer.

Sunderland see Galarza as one of South America’s most talented midfielders, valuing his defensive instincts and passing ability. Adding him would give Regis Le Bris more quality and depth in the middle of the park.

Galarza spent the previous campaign on loan at Atlanta United in Major League Soccer, making 13 appearances. He failed to record a goal or an assist during that spell.

He loves tackling, times challenges well and often wins the ball inside his own half. Primarily a central midfielder, he can also operate as an attacking midfielder or left‑winger.

There are doubts whether he can cope with the Premier League’s physical intensity. Improving his goal and assist output will be essential for his success in England.

If signed, Galarza should be able to compete for a regular first‑team spot at the Wearside club next season. Le Bris will need to give him time to adapt before extracting his best performances.

For Sunderland, the player offers a long‑term solution as his contract runs to 2028. For Galarza, a move to the Premier League provides a platform to develop and showcase his abilities.

Galarza was seen reacting during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D match between Paraguay and Australia on 25 June 2026 in Santa Clara, California. The image was captured by photographer Stu Forster.
