From prison to Cape Town: Rai Vloet revives career in South Africa
Thirty‑one‑year‑old Dutch midfielder Rai Vloet has secured a contract with South African Premier Division side Cape Town City FC, marking his return to professional football just weeks after completing a two‑and‑a‑half‑year prison sentence for a fatal drink‑driven crash. The 31‑year‑old will wear number 10 and hopes to rebuild his career.
Vloet served two and a half years in prison after being convicted for causing the death of a four‑year‑old child in a drink‑driven crash on the A4 highway. The incident occurred while he was still under contract with Russian side FK Oeral, whose agreement had already expired shortly before his sentencing.
A product of PSV’s youth academy, Vloet was recruited by Roda JC at a young age before moving on to a series of clubs across Europe and Asia. His senior résumé includes SC Cambuur, FC Eindhoven, FC Chiasso, Frosinone, Sint‑Truidense, Excelsior, Heracles Almelo, FC Astana and FK Oeral, and he logged sixteen appearances in the Dutch top flight.
Cape Town City FC announced that Vloet will wear the number 10 shirt for the remainder of the season. The length of his contract was not disclosed, but he will be reunited with fellow Dutchmen trainer Jan Vreman and goalkeeper Mickey van der Hart at the club.
In May, shortly after regaining his freedom, Vloet publicly confirmed his intention to resume his playing career. He later clarified that South Africa would be his next destination, a plan now realised with his Cape Town signing.
The midfielder’s return to competitive football comes after a complete absence from the sport during his incarceration. His move to the South African Premier Division marks the first professional engagement since his release.
