Injury heartbreak: Belgium’s World Cup midfielder vows return
WK-ganger België midfielder Amadou Onana, who suffered a severe ACL injury in the round of 16 against the Verenigde Staten, posted an open and emotional message on Instagram. He said his world collapsed but he will return, insha'Allah.
The midfielder of Aston Villa tore his cruciate ligament during the eight‑team knockout match against the Verenigde Staten. The injury forced him out of België’s WK campaign.
Onana shared his thoughts on Instagram, writing, ‘Het is heel moeilijk om onder woorden te brengen hoe ik me voel.’ He added that he wanted to be honest because otherwise writing would be pointless.
He described the moment he hit the ground as the point when his whole world fell apart. He questioned why it happened to him now and expressed anger and sadness about being unable to play his favourite sport.
The following morning he hoped it was a nightmare, but soon realised his anterior cruciate ligament was torn. He replayed the incident repeatedly in his mind, wondering what he could have done differently.
On the third day his faith took over, and he said, ‘Als god het wil,’ that Allah gave him a blessed family and many supporters. He thanked his loved ones and said he felt gratitude for being in a privileged position.
He thanked his teammates at the Rode Duivels and everyone at Aston Villa for their love and messages. He concluded with the promise, ‘Ik kom terug, insha'Allah,’ and added, Onana.‘Wat as a final affirmation.
Onana remains focused on rehabilitation and aims to return to the Belgium squad as soon as possible. His determination suggests he will strive to overcome the setback and rejoin competitive football.
