Gernot Trauner leaves Feyenoord after five years transfer-free

Defender Gernot Trauner is leaving Feyenoord after five years at the club. The 34-year-old Austrian had a contract due to expire. "A new chapter awaits me and my family. We don’t know what the future holds, but we will always be grateful for the past five years in Rotterdam," Trauner wrote on Instagram.

Trauner missed significant playing time in recent seasons due to injuries. Last season he featured in just five Eredivisie matches. In 2023 he won the league title with the Rotterdam side, followed by the KNVB Cup in 2024.

"I will always carry with me the countless special moments on and off the pitch," Trauner wrote. "The European nights in De Kuip and across Europe, the celebrations after winning the league and the cup, and every moment with you, the supporters."

He added: "I will miss playing in De Kuip, hearing (and singing along to) the Feyenoord anthems, and the time spent at 1908," referring to the club’s training complex.

Trauner joined Feyenoord in 2019 and made 120 appearances across all competitions. His departure follows the expiry of his contract, meaning no transfer fee was involved.

The Austrian defender leaves as Feyenoord prepare for a new season under new leadership. Club captain Lutsharel Geertruida will remain as a central figure in the squad.

Injury struggles have defined Trauner’s later years at Feyenoord. He underwent multiple procedures and faced prolonged rehabilitation periods.

Trauner’s final message thanked fans for their unwavering support during his time in Rotterdam. He praised the club’s culture and the passion of the supporters.

Feyenoord confirmed Trauner’s exit in a club statement released on social media. No replacement has been named at this stage.
