Haller says goodbye to Utrecht, eyes move to Sanfrecce Hiroshima

🇳🇱

Under the floodlights of Stadion Galgenwaard, 32‑year‑old striker Sébastien Haller raised his hand to the departing crowd, announcing his exit after a season‑and‑a‑half back at FC Utrecht. The Ivorian forward, who scored five goals in 37 Eredivisie appearances this term, posted a heartfelt farewell on Instagram.

Haller first arrived at FC Utrecht in 2015 and, during his 2015‑2017 spell, became a prolific goal scorer. His form earned him a transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt and later moves to West Ham United, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund.

A bout of testicular cancer and subsequent injuries limited his impact at Dortmund, prompting a loan return to FC Utrecht during the winter break of the 2024/2025 season. He then signed a one‑year contract with the Dutch club in August 2025.

In his second stint, Haller managed five goals across 37 Eredivisie matches. He reflected, "I would wish I could have meant more for this team. One thing is certain: I never played unfairly. I always gave my best with honesty, respect and effort."

Now 32, Haller wishes FC Utrecht success for the upcoming campaign and appears poised for a new adventure in Japan. Media reports indicate Sanfrecce Hiroshima are keen to sign the striker.

His departure closes a chapter that linked the club with a player who once wrote club history, while his potential move highlights the growing appeal of Asian leagues for European talent. Utrecht will need to replace his goal contribution, and Japanese clubs continue to attract seasoned internationals.
