Marcelo Bielsa resigns as Uruguay coach after World Cup exit and player fallout

Uruguay's national team coach Marcelo Bielsa announced his resignation on Tuesday, ending a brief tenure that began in May 2023. The decision follows the team's early elimination from the World Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage despite a win over Cape Verde.

Uruguay opened the tournament with a 1‑1 draw against Saudi Arabia, then secured a 2‑0 victory over Cape Verde before a 1‑0 defeat to Spain sealed their fate. The loss to the European giants came after a goalkeeper error that sparked a heated exchange on the pitch and highlighted growing tensions within the squad.

Bielsa's press conference in Montevideo lasted an unprecedented 100 minutes, during which he repeatedly stressed that his tactical and motivational messages never reached the players. "Waar ik absoluut zeker van ben, is dat het niemand boeit wat ik weet," he said, suggesting a breakdown in communication that undermined his authority.

He accepted full responsibility for the team's performance, acknowledging that his management of the squad was insufficient. "Mijn verantwoordelijkheid voor wat er is gebeurd is heel duidelijk," Bielsa remarked, while also insisting that a different approach would not have altered the final outcome.

The coach also defended goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, who asked to be substituted after his mistake against Spain. Bielsa explained that Muslera was ill the day before the match and felt mentally unable to continue after the error. "Het is me nog nooit overkomen dat een speler vroeg om vervangen te worden vanwege de impact die zijn fouten hadden op zijn mentale toestand," he noted.

The fallout extended beyond the locker room. Reports emerged that the Uruguayan Football Association cancelled the charter flight for the players after the tournament, forcing them to arrange their own travel home—a move Bielsa described as a symptom of the deteriorating relationship between the coaching staff and the squad.

Bielsa's departure leaves the federation facing a swift search for an interim manager ahead of upcoming qualifiers. The association has thanked the Argentine tactician for his contributions but emphasized the need for a fresh direction to restore unity within the national team.

As Uruguay looks to rebuild, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see whether a new coach can bridge the divide and revive the country's storied football legacy.
