James Pearce dismisses Darwin Nunez Liverpool return rumours

James Pearce told The Athletic’s Walk On Podcast that a Darwin Nunez return to Liverpool is “ridiculous”. He said he “doesn’t even know where to start” with the idea, indicating a firm rejection. Darwin Nunez’s Saudi spell reportedly ended abruptly, prompting speculation about his next club. Mundo Deportivo suggested Premier League interest, naming Liverpool and Chelsea as possible observers. The rumor gained traction on social media after the loose idea spread. Liverpool’s attack has looked light, with concerns over Hugo Ekitike’s fitness adding to the anxiety. New head coach Andoni Iraola’s arrival has already sparked questions about how quickly the front line can be reshaped. Supporters have been tempted by familiar names amid the squad’s depth worries. Pearce explained that Liverpool moved on from Nunez for footballing and strategic reasons. He added that Nunez’s contract was ripped up in Saudi Arabia, meaning he would demand a massive signing‑on fee, high wages and probably a four‑year deal. Even a free transfer would not be cheap under those terms. Recruitment chief Michael Edwards and director of football Richard Hughes have built Liverpool’s model around value, planning and squad sustainability. A costly Nunez return would clash with that logic, especially as the club seeks precision in the market. Pearce’s verdict suggests a Liverpool comeback looks highly improbable while Nunez’s future remains unresolved.
