Jurgen Klopp apologises for ‘still’ remark on Nagelsmann

Jurgen Klopp apologised to Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann after a remark on Magenta TV during the World Cup sparked controversy. The comment was made while discussing Germany’s preparations for the tournament. Klopp used the word “still” when saying “Luckily, Julian Nagelsmann is still picking the team,” which some interpreted as hinting at possible danger to Nagelsmann’s position. The phrasing attracted attention because Klopp has frequently been linked with the Germany job. Klopp said he immediately regretted the wording, calling “still” the most hated word of the year. He added that he could have punched himself, noted he would turn 59 on Tuesday, and described himself as “still an idiot.” Klopp then affirmed his full support for Nagelsmann, stating “We are completely on your side, whatever you do with this.” He insisted nothing would be done to disrupt the national team process. Germany opened their World Cup campaign with a 7‑1 victory over Curacao, easing concerns about Nagelsmann’s tenure. When asked about the controversy, Nagelsmann replied simply, “Good. Then. Next question.” Speculation about Klopp’s own links to the Germany job remains, but he has taken a senior football role with Red Bull after leaving Liverpool in 2024. His record includes successes at Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, such as Premier League and Champions League triumphs. His achievements ensure he stays a candidate for elite positions.
