KNVB anticipates 15,000 fans for Netherlands‑Sweden World Cup match in Houston
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) expects about 15,000 supporters to travel to Houston for the Netherlands‑Sweden World Cup match on Saturday, after seeing a similar crowd in Dallas for the 2‑2 draw with Japan. The fan festival will kick off at 08:00 local time before the 12:00 kickoff.
"We had expected 10,000 people then, but it turned out to be at least 15,000, a lot more. Our estimate for Houston is also that at least 15,000 people will come," said a KNVB spokesperson. The estimate for Houston is based on the unexpectedly high attendance in Dallas earlier this week.
The association has sold 5,000 tickets for the Sweden encounter. Additional fans, including Dutch expatriates living in the United States, are expected to join the celebration.
In Dallas, a large portion of the stadium turned orange during the match against Japan, likely because many American spectators wore orange shirts. This visual support underscored the growing enthusiasm for the tournament in the United States.
Yuki, FeestDJRuud and Yves Berendse will provide music to energize the supporters at the fan plaza. At 08:45 the group of Oranjefans will board the traditional Oranjebus for the four‑kilometre march to the 72,000‑seat Houston Stadium.
The route, described by the KNVB spokesperson, passes through typical American neighbourhoods. Minister Mirjam Sterk of Long‑term Care, Youth and Sport will also board the Oranjebus.
The match against Sweden is scheduled for Saturday at 12:00 U.S. time (19:00 CET). The early‑morning fan festival gives supporters ample time to gather before the kickoff.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, aged 40, announced that he has reached five million followers in a few hours. He described the milestone as “Dit is een emotionele dag”.
