Koeman backs Malen before Netherlands' Japan opener

Donyell Malen faces pressure as Netherlands’ starting striker at the World Cup after scoring 14 goals for AS Roma in Serie A this season. The Dutch striker struggled in recent friendlies, missing multiple chances in losses to Algeria and Uzbekistan. Ronald Koeman dismissed concerns about Malen’s effort but stressed his finishing must improve. Koeman said Malen has shown he can score but admitted his conversion rate has been too low. Memphis Depay remains unfit, leaving Malen likely to start against Japan in Dallas on Sunday. Training sessions in Kansas City focused on placing Malen in scoring positions repeatedly. Koeman’s methods aim to restore the striker’s sharpness ahead of the tournament opener. Wednesday’s session was light, featuring small-sided games and playful drills. Malen was seen joking with teammate Micky van de Ven during the session. Malen’s Roma form contrasts sharply with his drought in the Dutch shirt. His last goal for Oranje came in November 2023 as a winger against Lithuania. Koeman plans individual talks with Malen and other players to address form. Former striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar suggested a direct conversation between Koeman and Malen. Ruud van Nistelrooij is assisting Koeman in coaching the Dutch strikers. Van Nistelrooij’s expertise includes analyzing footage and discussing movement patterns with players. Koeman emphasized that Malen must convert chances but acknowledged Van Nistelrooij’s role in providing tactical guidance. The coach warned that if Malen fails to deliver, a change may be necessary. Brian Brobbey and Depay remain alternatives. Koeman confirmed Depay is nearing full fitness and is crucial for Netherlands’ World Cup ambitions. Netherlands face Japan on Sunday at 22:00 CET in Dallas. The match will be broadcast live on NPO 1 and NPO Radio 1.
