Koeman says Japan subs lacked impact, urges responsibility
Ronald Koeman admitted that the substitutions he made during the Netherlands' defeat to Japan did not produce the expected impact, and he accepted full responsibility for the shortfall. He added that the Dutch side must show greater responsibility on the pitch as they prepare for their next match against Sweden on Saturday at 19:00.
“De impact van de wissels was niet goed en die verantwoordelijkheid ligt bij mij,” Koeman told reporters after the Japan game. He said the lack of effect from the changes was a direct reflection of his own decisions.
Koeman stressed that, as a “big boy,” he must also take the criticism that comes with the role. He explained that discussing the issue with his staff is part of the process and not a problem.

He pointed out specific moments in the match, noting that twice after gaining the lead the team retreated too quickly. Koeman argued that the side should have pressed forward more aggressively in those periods. The coach added that players can assume more responsibility, both individually and collectively on the field. He emphasized that accountability should extend beyond the trainer to teammates as well.Frenkie de Jong injury doubt for Sweden clash as Koeman defends selections
Koeman mentioned that he had tried to explain the rationale behind the substitutions, but the intended impact did not materialise. He concluded that the concept behind the changes failed to influence the game as planned. The Netherlands will open their next fixture against Sweden on Saturday at 19:00. Koeman indicated that the upcoming encounter will be an opportunity to address the issues raised after the Japan match.
