Manchester City propose new contract and loan for James Trafford
Manchester City have floated a contract proposal for goalkeeper James Trafford that includes a long‑term loan option. Sporting director Hugo Viana is reported to be behind the plan. Chelsea are said to be monitoring the situation.
Trafford, a 23‑year‑old academy graduate, helped Manchester City secure a FA Cup and Carabao Cup double under manager Pep Guardiola. He kept clean sheets in both finals at Wembley. The campaign was the 2025/26 season.
Gianluigi Donnarumma remains the undisputed No.1 goalkeeper for Manchester City. Trafford is seeking regular top‑tier minutes to preserve his international standing. He is currently away with England at the FIFA World Cup under Thomas Tuchel.
Manchester City are also handling a £100 million dispute with Nottingham Forest over Elliot Anderson. The board views securing Trafford’s long‑term commitment as a vital pillar for the post‑Guardiola era. Incoming manager Enzo Maresca is expected to review the goalkeeping hierarchy.
The club aims to finalise the contract before pre‑season training begins in July. A premium top‑flight loan partner would allow Trafford to continue his development at the highest level. The outcome will shape his path to eventually inherit the starting role at the Etihad Stadium.
