Maurice Steijn faces a full market in search of a new Eredivisie role
Former Sparta Rotterdam manager Maurice Steijn, now without a club, told reporters at Het Oranje Café on Thursday that he hopes to secure a new Eredivisie appointment soon, but acknowledged that “all the spots are now taken” as he limits his search to the Netherlands and, at most, Europe or the Middle East.
Steijn admitted on Thursday at Het Oranje Café that “it’s a bit strange, having no job”. He added that he hopes not to stay unemployed for long, but finds the situation “quite all right” for the moment.
The former coach of Ajax, NAC Breda and VVV‑Venlo said he would prefer to remain in the Netherlands. He did not rule out opportunities elsewhere in Europe or the Middle East, but stressed that his first choice is a Dutch club.
Steijn’s last season with Sparta Rotterdam ended with the team finishing tenth in the Eredivisie. A dip in form at the end of the campaign cost Sparta a place in the European play‑offs.
In March, Steijn publicly announced that he would not continue at Sparta Rotterdam beyond the season. The announcement came before the club’s final matches, confirming his departure.
During the off‑season, Steijn was linked with AZ and FC Utrecht, but both clubs ultimately pursued other candidates. The rumours did not materialise into formal offers.
At present Steijn remains without a contract but hopes to return to the Eredivisie soon. He reiterated that all the available positions are currently occupied, leaving his next move uncertain.
