Mons sign top D1 Amateurs scorer Mayron De Almeida
Belgian club Mons have secured the services of free‑agent striker Mayron De Almeida from Virton, confirming the move as the top scorer of the D1 Amateurs with 20 goals in 31 matches last season, and he will remain in the D1 FFA for the upcoming campaign.
Mayron De Almeida was trained and revealed at Stade Yvan Georges ten years ago and is of Portuguese origin from the Gaume region. He returned to the Belgian Excel in 2023 after spells at Tours, Progrès Niederkorn—where he netted nine goals in sixteen preliminary European matches—and Red Star.
During his second spell at Virton, De Almeida amassed forty goals across three seasons, a tally that helped the D1 Amateurs side push toward a return to professional football. His scoring record cemented his reputation as a prolific forward in the amateur league.
In the most recent season, De Almeida recorded twenty goals in thirty‑one matches, earning him the distinction of top scorer in the D1 Amateurs series. This performance underscored his importance to Virton’s attack.
A few days ago, De Almeida confirmed he would not accompany Virton in the D1B, opting instead to seek a new challenge. His decision opened the door for Mons to acquire his services.
Mons, long‑time rivals of Virton, announced the signing of De Almeida as they prepare for the next campaign, describing the addition as a major reinforcement. De Almeida had previously found the net at Tondreau during the return leg of the recent Promotions Playoffs.
The Dragons of Mons have stated that their objective for the upcoming season is promotion, leaving no room for compromise. The club’s ambition reflects a clear “promotion or nothing” stance.
Virton will compete in the D1B without its two leading scorers, as Emmanuel Mballa also departed the Excel to join Dender. The club’s management has indicated it will not accept this situation lightly.
