Moreira’s hunger wins fans, but Garcia still weighs his role
Diego Moreira entered the FIFA World Cup match against Senegal in the 63rd minute, providing a burst of energy for Belgium. He touched the ball 29 times and completed ten of fourteen passes, instantly winning the admiration of Belgian supporters.
Before this appearance, Moreira had not featured in the tournament, remaining on the bench during Belgium's 1‑1 draw with Egypt. He also stayed unused in the 0‑0 stalemate with Iran and was omitted from the 1‑5 loss to New Zealand, prompting questions about coach Rudi Garcia's selections.
Ahead of the World Cup, Moreira said, “Chaque joueur a envie de jouer chaque match. Dans les entraînements, il faut juste montrer que tu es disponible et donner le maximum. C’est ce que je fais. Quand l’entraîneur décidera, je me donnerai à fond.”
Despite not playing, Moreira was certain he felt ready.
Belgian fans open apology site after Rudi Garcia’s near‑miss vs Senegal
When he replaced Hans Vanaken, the Strasbourg winger demonstrated his hunger by delivering eight passes into the opponent’s final third. Overall he completed ten of fourteen passes and recorded 29 touches, highlighting his involvement. He produced five crosses, the highest number among Belgian players, though only one found its target. He also attempted four dribbles, succeeding twice, showing mixed effectiveness. His pressing led to the first Belgian goal, as the ball reached Thomas Meunier, who set up Romelu Lukaku. On the second goal, Moreira supplied a pass to Leandro Trossard, whose cross was turned in by Youri Tielemans. While his passes sometimes lacked precision, his overall impact was noted by supporters. Defender Maxim De Cuyper, meanwhile, did not deliver a standout performance on the left side of defence. Garcia appears inclined to reward recent form, leaving open the possibility that Moreira could start against the United States. If selected, his versatility could provide Belgium with an additional attacking outlet in the knockout stage.
