Nathan Ngoy sent off for red card against Iran

Central defender Nathan Ngoy, 23, was shown a red card in the Belgium versus Iran match after a mistimed back pass to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois led to Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi escaping his challenge. The incident occurred just after the hour mark as Belgium held the advantage. Nathan Ngoy, the 23‑year‑old central defender for the Belgian national team, received a red card after committing a foul on Iran’s forward Mehdi Taremi. The referee showed him a red card immediately following the challenge. Ngoy attempted to play the ball back to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, but his pass was far too short. The mis‑execution allowed Taremi to break free and avoid a potential interception. Toby Alderweireld criticised Ngoy’s decision, saying, “Je bent zo ver van het doel, je moet eraf blijven. Courtois staat nog achter jou.” The veteran defender’s comment was made during the post‑match analysis on the ‘Deviltime’ programme. Belgium coach Rudi Garcia responded by substituting Romelu Lukaku for Arthur Theate in an effort to reinforce the midfield. The change was described as a move for safety after the defensive lapse. The incident was highlighted by a reaction from the oldest son of Kevin De Bruyne, who was seen covering his eyes as the disallowed goal attempt unfolded. The young spectator’s gesture underscored the disappointment felt by the Belgian camp.
