Newport County’s midfield rebuild hinges on Keenan Patten’s new deal
Midfielder Keenan Patten, 25, has signed a short‑term contract to remain at League Two side Newport County, ending his imminent free‑agency status this summer. The former Cardiff City youngster made just six appearances – only one start – for the Exiles since arriving in February 2025, prompting the club to secure his services amid a midfield reshuffle.
Newport County entered the off‑season with a depleted midfield after the exits of Michael Spellman, Bobby Kamwa and captain Matt Baker, alongside seven other players who were not offered new contracts. The departures left a void that the club hopes Patten can help fill as they rebuild under interim manager Chris Todd.
Newport have not disclosed the length of Patten's new deal, but the club emphasised his aim to ‘reignite his career at Rodney Parade following a challenging spell with injury’. Patten’s injury history includes a broken leg suffered in July 2024, after which his only senior football in the 2025‑26 season came during a loan spell at Barry Town.
Patten’s contract arrives after Newport secured ex‑Bromley defender Kyle Cameron, former Blackpool defender Dan Sassi, and forwards Christian Doidge and Yahya Bamba – both ex‑Forest Green – as well as Shaquille Gwengwe from Poole Town. Defenders Cameron Norman and Cameron Evans also renewed their terms, joining midfielder Harrison Biggins in extending the squad’s depth.
The club resumed pre‑season training on Monday, 29 June, while still searching for a permanent manager following the departure of Christian Fuchs. Interim boss Chris Todd will oversee Patten’s integration as the squad prepares for the upcoming League Two campaign.
Patten must compete for a regular starting berth after a limited spell of senior football, and his progress will be closely monitored as Newport aim to stabilise the squad ahead of the new season.
