Porto’s €70m clause caps Arsenal’s €26m profit on Kiwior
Porto have set a €70m release clause on 26‑year‑old defender Jakub Kiwior, whose transfer from Arsenal was finally confirmed on July 1 after the Gunners waited for the June 30 expiry of his contract, ending weeks of speculation. The deal marks the culmination of a two‑month silence from the London club.
Porto first disclosed in early May that they had activated their option to buy Kiwior, but Arsenal did not issue an official statement until the July 1 post. The club’s delayed announcement coincided with the final day of the player’s contract on June 30, prompting the move.
The transfer fee comprises a fixed €17m payment plus €5m in potential add‑ons, bringing the guaranteed sum to €22m (£18.9m). Arsenal also secured a €2m sell‑on clause and received a €2m loan fee last summer, raising the maximum value of the deal to €26m (£22.4m).
Arsenal originally signed Kiwior for €20m (£17.6m) in 2023, meaning the club recoups most of its initial outlay. The defender’s contract with Arsenal expired on June 30, prompting the move.
Kiwior logged 68 appearances for Arsenal across two‑and‑a‑half seasons, including a Community Shield triumph. He featured 39 times for FC Porto in the 2025/26 campaign, helping the Portuguese side clinch the Liga Portugal title. He was unlikely to receive a Premier League winner’s medal, having been in the Arsenal squad for only one match.
FC Porto have included a €70m release clause in Kiwior’s contract, but there is little expectation of it being activated. The deal’s total value of €26m for Arsenal illustrates how clubs recoup fees through add‑ons and sell‑on clauses.
