PSV and Ajax battle for Mijnans as fee settles below expectations
PSV Eindhoven have agreed to pay around €13 million to AZ Alkmaar for 26‑year‑old midfielder Sven Mijnans. The transfer will be completed next week with a long‑term contract at the Philips Stadion.
Mijnans emerged as a key player at AZ Alkmaar after joining from Sparta Rotterdam in 2023. His development in Alkmaar attracted interest from the Eredivisie champions, who see him as a boost to their midfield.
PSV Eindhoven will reunite Mijnans with former teammate Ruben van Bommel, who also plays for the Eindhoven side. The club views the signing as part of maintaining their domestic dominance.
Ajax Amsterdam also pursued Mijnans, registering serious interest alongside several foreign clubs. However, PSV Eindhoven outbid the Amsterdam club and secured the agreement.
PSV could not trigger a release clause in Mijnans’ contract, but the player and AZ Alkmaar agreed on specific conditions that lowered the final fee. The resulting €13 million sum is reported to be slightly below earlier estimates.
Mijnans is scheduled for a medical examination on Monday before the formal signing. Once the paperwork is completed, PSV Eindhoven expects to present him to the public next week.
The move follows AZ Alkmaar’s 2023 purchase of Mijnans from Sparta Rotterdam for €2.5 million. PSV Eindhoven’s acquisition reinforces their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
