Rafael Leao sent off in Portugal friendly vs Chile

Rafael Leao was shown a red card by referee Luca Zufferli in Lisbon during Portugal's friendly against Chile. Portugal, captained by Cristiano Ronaldo, entered the match at full strength. Chilean forward Felipe Faundez challenged Leao and then collided with Portugal full‑back Joao Cancelo. Ivan Roman rushed in to protect Faundez, after which Leao and Roman exchanged pushes. Both Leao and Roman received second yellow cards and were sent off. Manager Roberto Martinez saw his plans unravel in first‑half stoppage time. Leao could face a three‑match suspension that would rule him out of the upcoming friendly with Nigeria on June 10 and Portugal's first two World Cup group games against DR Congo and Uzbekistan. Leao recorded 12 goal contributions for AC Milan in Serie A last season. Ronaldo previously earned a straight red against the Republic of Ireland after striking Dara O'Shea, missing only the match against Armenia before two suspended matches were applied. A FIFA statement warned that any further similar infringement by Ronaldo would automatically revoke the suspended portion of his ban. Jurgen Locadia, a former Brighton player, also remains eligible for the World Cup under the same leniency. Chile, whose representative Ivan Roman plays for Atletico Mineiro, failed to qualify for the 48‑team World Cup, finishing bottom of the CONMEBOL table with just two wins. Nicolas Cordova's side ended the campaign without a tournament appearance for the first time since 2014.
