Rangers' Ferguson chase hinges on Bologna's Barron pursuit

🇬🇧

Rangers are desperate to secure Bologna captain Nonce Ferguson as they look to bolster their midfield, and Bologna’s renewed interest in Rangers midfielder Connor Barron may force the Italian club to reconsider its stance, potentially clearing a path for the Scottish side’s coveted target.

Rangers have already made an enquiry for Bologna captain Nonce Ferguson. They know any deal would be difficult, with the Italian club valuing the midfielder in the eight‑figure bracket and facing interest from Roma and Atalanta.

Bologna’s continued interest in Connor Barron dates back to his 2024 move from Aberdeen to Rangers, when the Serie A side asked the Scotland international to wait. Barron opted for the offer on the table from Rangers instead.

The club reportedly made an approach last season that was rebuffed by then‑sporting director Kevin Thelwell. Rangers made clear at the time that Barron was not for sale.

Barron still sits on Bologna’s shortlist, and his representatives are aware of the renewed Serie A interest. Whether Rangers would sanction a sale this summer remains unclear.

New Rangers manager Derek McInnes is a known admirer of Barron, having worked with the midfielder as he progressed through Aberdeen’s ranks. McInnes’ familiarity could influence any future negotiations.

Rangers’ ability to fund Ferguson may hinge on outgoing transfers, with Belgian midfielder Nicolas Raskin linked with both Atalanta and Bologna. Raskin’s possible move adds another variable to the Scottish club’s financial calculations.

Rangers will monitor Bologna’s handling of Barron as they weigh a potential Ferguson bid. The outcome will likely depend on how the club resolves the Raskin situation and secures the necessary funds.
