Real Madrid appoint José Mourinho as manager for three seasons
Real Madrid confirmed José Mourinho as first‑team coach on a three‑year contract. The appointment was announced after Florentino Pérez retained the club presidency.
Pérez had pledged during his election campaign that Mourinho would take over if he defeated Enrique Riquelme, which he did. Benfica reported that Mourinho’s departure was secured by an agreement before the Real Madrid announcement.
The Board of Directors met on Thursday, June 11, chaired by Pérez, and formalised Mourinho’s contract until 30 June 2029. Mourinho will join the squad on 13 July, the start of preseason.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, and returns after two seasons without a major trophy. He also inherits a dressing‑room that showed discontent at the end of Alvaro Arbeloa’s tenure.
Supporters expressed excitement about the former “Special One” returning to the Bernabeu, and the club now looks to him to restore success.
