Roberto Martinez to leave Portugal after World Cup regardless of results
Roberto Martinez has announced he will step down as Portugal's head coach after the World Cup in the United States, a decision reported by British outlet Talksport. The 52‑year‑old's departure will occur regardless of how far the team progresses in the tournament.
Martinez, 52, took charge of the Portuguese national side in 2023. Since then he has overseen the team's preparations and competitive fixtures.
He will commence his second major tournament on Wednesday, when Portugal opens the World Cup at 19:00 against the Democratic Republic of Congo. The match marks the team's first appearance in the competition hosted by the United States.
Portugal's group schedule also includes games versus Uzbekistan and Colombia later in the tournament. Both fixtures will follow the opening clash against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
At Euro 2024, Portugal were eliminated in the quarter‑finals by France. The loss came under Martinez's guidance during his first major tournament with the side.
Talksport notes that Martinez's resignation decision does not depend on Portugal's progress in the upcoming World Cup. The coach has already resolved to leave irrespective of the team's results.
His contract runs out after the World Cup in the United States, and Martinez has indicated he will not sign a new agreement. Consequently, his departure after the tournament is confirmed.
