Ronald Koeman faces criticism after Dutch substitutions

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman came under fire after his substitutions in the World Cup opening match against Japan. Crysencio Summerville, who had put Oranje ahead 2‑1, was withdrawn, and Japan later equalised through Koki Ogawa. Koeman replaced Summerville, Donyell Malen and Tijjani Reijnders with Memphis Depay, Teun Koopmeiners and Quinten Timber. Nathan Ake also came on for Ryan Gravenberch as the Dutch tried to protect the lead. Fans and media criticised the removal of Summerville and Malen, arguing they had stretched the Japanese defence. The Dutch then sat back, allowing Japan to dominate possession, and Koki Ogawa, a forward from NEC Nijmegen, headed a corner from Daichi Kamada into the net late on. The next fixture pits the Netherlands against Sweden, followed by a decisive clash with Tunisia. Koeman’s side must beat Sweden to avoid added pressure, while a victory over Tunisia should secure at least four points and likely progression to the knockout stage.
