Stoke City sign SC Braga midfielder Djibril Soumare

Stoke City have secured the services of SC Braga midfielder Djibril Soumare, the 23‑year‑old Senegal‑born player, on a three‑year deal that becomes official on 1 July. The move marks the Potters’ first summer signing and follows Soumare’s season on loan with Championship side Sheffield United.

Soumare will join Stoke City on 1 July after agreeing the three‑year contract, though the transfer fee was not disclosed. The midfielder’s contract runs until the summer of 2029.

Born in Senegal, Djibril Soumare signed for Portuguese top‑flight side SC Braga in 2023. He made two appearances for Braga before spending most of his senior minutes on loan.

During the 2025‑26 season, Soumare was on loan at Championship club Sheffield United, where he featured in 27 matches across all competitions. His time in England gave him regular exposure to the physical demands of the league.

Stoke sporting director Jonathan Walters said last week he aims to add several players before pre‑season starts next month. He described Soumare as a player who will complement the squad well.

Walters told the club’s website, “He has the attributes to operate as a defensive midfielder, protect the back line and help the team progress the ball.” He added, “Last season gave him the opportunity to settle into the Championship with Sheffield United, and we believe that experience will serve him well going forward.”
