Thomas Buitink (26) retires from pro football and joins Sparta Nijkerk

Thomas Buitink, 26, announced on Tuesday that he is retiring from professional football. Hours later, within hours of his retirement announcement, he confirmed he will continue playing at amateur level after signing for Sparta Nijkerk, a club competing in the Dutch second division. Buitink began his football journey with Veensche Boys before joining the youth academy of Vitesse. He later progressed through Vitesse’s ranks to the senior team. In his professional career Buitink represented Vitesse, PEC Zwolle and Fortuna Sittard. His stint at PEC Zwolle was described by him earlier as a “lijdensweg”. Speaking about his decision, Buitink said, “It was a difficult but well‑considered decision to stop professional football. But it is good like that and I look forward to what the future has to offer me.” He called the choice difficult but deliberate and expressed optimism for his post‑retirement plans. Sparta Nijkerk announced that the 26‑year‑old forward from Nijkerk has signed for the club. The signing marks his first appearance for Sparta Nijkerk and he will play for enjoyment rather than professional ambition. The club said, “With his experience at Eredivisie level and his background in professional football, Sparta Nijkerk immediately adds quality and depth to the attack line.” Sparta Nijkerk also welcomed Buitink and wished him success and enjoyment at the club.
