Tottenham's pursuit of Gakpo fuels Liverpool transfer dilemma

Cody Gakpo’s uncertain future has intensified after Tottenham Hotspur signalled serious interest, while the Dutch forward struggled to reach double‑figure goal contributions under Arne Slot in the 2025‑26 season and has not requested a move from Liverpool. And his £250,000‑per‑week contract further complicates the Reds’ summer plans. Tottenham Hotspur finished the 2024‑25 campaign in 17th place, just two points above the relegation zone. The club’s poor season has prompted a comprehensive reshuffle, with Cody Gakpo appearing on the shortlist for a potential signing. Roberto de Zerbi is overseeing a massive rebuild in the N17 league, linking players such as Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes with possible moves. Tottenham are currently the leading club in the race to acquire Gakpo’s services. Journalist David Lynch told Anfield Index that rumours of Gakpo asking to leave Anfield are “nonsense”. He added that the player’s focus remains on the World Cup, though a transfer could materialise after the tournament if clubs can meet the fee. Gakpo recently signed a long‑term deal with Liverpool worth around £250,000 per week. Liverpool could recoup approximately £60 million by selling him, which would significantly reduce the wage bill. Replacing Gakpo would require Liverpool to target another attacker, a task complicated by the high prices in the current transfer market. The club now operates under manager Andoni Iraola, who succeeded Arne Slot, adding another layer to the decision‑making process.
