Trump confirms role in Balogun's rescinded ban
The controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun's rescinded red card continues. Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that he played a role in the decision made by Gianni Infantino and FIFA. Meanwhile, Belgium's appeal has been dismissed.
The Belgian team was surprised by the news of Balogun's overturned red card. The American striker received a red card against Bosnia & Herzegovina, but it was rescinded at Trump's request.
The KBVB sought clarification from FIFA but was told that their correspondence was considered an appeal, which was then deemed inadmissible.
FIFA chief defends decision after Trump intervenes in Balogun red card row
At a press conference, Trump revealed that he had a phone conversation with Infantino about the red card. Trump stated, 'The action for which he got red was not a foul.' He also criticized the referee, saying, 'The referee with a suspicious past made a decision that nobody could believe.' Trump explained that he requested a review from FIFA, saying, 'It's very unfair that you're suspended for the next game.' He also compared Balogun's situation to that of prominent players, saying, 'How would it be if you excluded Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Harry Kane? That's why I think FIFA made a great decision.'
