Van Hecke joins Tottenham, NAC gets record €4.5m

Jan Paul van Hecke has officially transferred from Brighton & Hove Albion to Tottenham Hotspur for an estimated €60 million, signing a multi‑year contract in London. The Dutch defender, a regular for the Netherlands at the World Cup, will join a Spurs side that escaped relegation last season. The move had been discussed for months, with Van Hecke expressing a desire to make the step himself and reaching an agreement with Tottenham. Prolonged negotiations finally produced a deal, allowing the transfer to be completed. On Tottenham’s official website, Van Hecke said, “It is a huge honour to become a Spurs player and joining such a great club is a dream come true.” He added that he already has a strong bond with head coach Roberto De Zerbi and that Micky van de Ven had spoken positively about the club. Van Hecke originally moved from NAC Breda to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2020 for roughly €2.5 million. Subsequent loan spells at SC Heerenveen and Blackburn Rovers helped him develop into a valued defender, and he missed only six Premier League matches over the past two seasons. The €60 million fee places Van Hecke among the most expensive Dutch players ever, with only Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Virgil van Dijk having been sold for higher amounts. NAC Breda secured a 7.5 % sell‑on clause, earning a record €4.5 million from the transfer. SC Heerenveen and VV Goes each receive €300 000 in solidarity payments, while the Zeeland academy JVOZ is allocated €1.2 million. The clubs confirmed the deal at 20:30 local time, finalising the paperwork for the €60 million move.
