Wouter Vrancken close to becoming Heart of Midlothian coach

🇧🇪 yesterday

Belgian coach Wouter Vrancken, 47, is on the brink of his first foreign appointment, with talks underway to become head coach of Scotland's Heart of Midlothian. The move follows his successful season at STVV, which ended with a third‑place finish and a European berth.

After the season, Vrancken announced his departure from STVV’s Stayen stadium. He indicated that his ambitions now extend beyond the Belgian competition.

During the weeks following his exit, his name was linked to several clubs. Burnley, Lorient and Bulgarian side Ludogorets each expressed concrete interest in the Belgian manager.

Heart of Midlothian, based in Edinburgh, enjoyed an impressive campaign, contesting the Scottish title until the final matchday before finishing behind Celtic. The season also saw manager Derek McInnes depart for Rangers, leaving the club in search of a new head coach.

Hearts identified Vrancken as a leading candidate and entered negotiations that were described as positive. Only the final financial terms remain to be settled before a contract can be signed.

Since 2025, entrepreneur Tony Bloom, also owner of Brighton & Hove Albion, holds a significant stake in Heart of Midlothian. Bloom is known in Belgium for his involvement in the revival of Union SG.

If the agreement is concluded, Vrancken will have little time to settle before the club’s European fixture. In the second qualifying round of the Champions League, Hearts will face SK Sturm Graz, and the new coach will be judged on early results.
