Abu Dhabi United Group financing drives Manchester City to a decade of titles

Manchester City exploded its performances after its takeover in 2008 by the Emirati fund Abu Dhabi United Group, an event that today explains its eclipse of Manchester United and the multiplication of titles. A recent judicial procedure has revealed key elements of this "financial fair play" that has fueled the club's success story.

The takeover and the financial transformation

In 2008, the Abu Dhabi United Group fund acquired Manchester City, injecting capital that radically changed the club's ability to recruit. This injection was described as "financial fair play" by observers, although later investigations raised questions about the transparency of the flows.

The star players of the metamorphosis

Players such as Sergio Agüero, David Silva, Erling Haaland and Rodri joined the Citizens, strengthening a squad already equipped with Kevin De Bruyne (who arrived in 2015) and Vincent Kompany (present since 2008). Their contribution led the club to win the Champions League in 2023, a historic first victory, followed by economic benefits estimated at more than 150 million euros in a single season.

The revelations of Football Leaks

In 2015, Portuguese hacker Rui Pinto began leaking confidential documents, known as Football Leaks. After his arrest in Budapest on 5 March 2019, he transmitted several terabytes of data to the German magazine Der Spiegel, using the pseudonym "John". These leaks shed light on an extraordinary financial system surrounding Manchester City, including sponsors and relationships with European bodies.

Rui Pinto, who sees himself as a whistleblower, was initially prosecuted by the Portuguese justice system, which requested his extradition to Hungary in 2019. Accused of computer intrusions and attempted extortion, he received official protection in Portugal, a program that will end on 10 October after the announcement of 30 September.

The hacker declared: "My life is in danger", calling for donations to support his protection. The Associated Press magazine indicated that it had never disclosed exactly how the documents were obtained, leaving some uncertainty about the sources.

The Spiegel investigations in 2018, based on these files, pointed the finger at Manchester City's sponsors and their links with European football bodies, fueling the debate on the sport's integrity.

As British and European authorities continue to examine these revelations, the question remains: what will be the consequences for Manchester City's economic model and for the financial fair play of world football?
