Ajao’s saves propel AMA Smile FC into 1xCup group stage
AMA Smile FC secured a place in the 1xCup 2026 group stage after goalkeeper Gabriel Ajao saved two spot‑kicks in a 4‑3 penalty shootout victory over Brighton FA, following a goalless regular time, at the Inspire Sports Ground in Cappa, Oshodi, Lagos on Friday.
Round of 50 drama in Ikorodu zone
The match was the round of 50 for the Ikorodu zone, but the contest failed to live up to expectations despite the high stakes.
After 90 minutes ended 0‑0, Ajao emerged as the hero by denying two Brighton attempts from the spot, turning the shootout in AMA Smile’s favour.
Brighton FA’s goalkeeper also made a save, yet his side missed two of their penalties, allowing AMA Smile FC to claim a 4‑3 win and send Brighton out of the competition.
Growing stakes of the 1xCup
Since its launch in 2023, the 1xCup has become a leading platform for grassroots football, featuring more than 180 clubs and over 5,000 players.
Several participants have progressed to professional opportunities across Nigeria, Africa and Europe, underscoring the tournament’s developmental impact.
Organisers stress that the competition prioritises opportunity over titles and this year introduced a ₦20 million prize pool, individual awards, enhanced media exposure, professional match organisation and an expanded scouting programme.
