Ajax eyes prolific Ukrainian striker as budget limits loom
In Kyiv, 20‑year‑old Matviy Ponomarenko, who has netted 13 goals in 15 matches this season, is being linked with Ajax as the Dutch club searches for a new striker. The Ukrainian forward’s contract runs until the end of 2028, adding a long‑term dimension to the potential move.
Beyond Ajax, clubs such as FC Porto, Brentford, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Galatasaray have also been mentioned in connection with the striker. All five clubs are reported to be monitoring the 20‑year‑old’s progress across Europe.
The Portuguese daily A Bola reported that FC Porto, coached by former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli, have taken a particular interest in Ponomarenko. Farioli’s side is said to be evaluating the Ukrainian forward as a potential addition.
Transfermarkt currently values Ponomarenko at €12 million. Dinamo Kiev, however, are reportedly demanding a minimum fee of €20 million, a sum that strains Ajax’s limited transfer budget.
Ajax technical director Jordi Cruijff is actively seeking a replacement for the departed Wout Weghorst. He is also linked with the possible acquisition of Kasper Dolberg, who is currently being linked with FC Midtjylland.
Since 2024, Ponomarenko has scored 18 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions. He debuted for the Ukraine national team in March, scoring in a 1‑3 loss to Sweden.
Should Ajax secure Ponomarenko, the club could bolster its attack while navigating financial constraints. The outcome will likely influence the transfer strategies of other European suitors.
