Ajax's chase for Uruguay striker Viñas meets fierce Spanish rivals
Ajax have set their sights on Uruguay international Federico Viñas, the 28‑year‑old striker who featured in all three group matches at the 2026 World Cup in North America. The Dutch club’s pursuit, reported by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, adds to a crowded market where several Spanish sides also vie for his services.
Ajax’s interest in Viñas follows his recent loan spell at Real Oviedo in Spain’s second tier. The club sees the forward as a potential solution to bolster their attacking options.
Viñas played for Uruguay at the 2026 World Cup, which ended in disappointment for the South American nation with two draws and a loss to Spain. Despite the team’s struggles, his involvement in all three group games highlighted his experience on the world stage.
The striker spent the previous season on loan at Real Oviedo, appearing in 34 matches and netting nine goals with one assist. After the loan, he returns to his parent club Club León in Mexico, where his contract runs until mid‑2027.
Besides Ajax, Elche and Deportivo La Coruña have also expressed interest in securing Viñas’s services. Real Oviedo is reportedly keen to re‑sign the forward, intensifying the competition for the Dutch side.
Transfermarkt values the Uruguayan attacker at four million euros. This valuation reflects his modest but solid output in Spain’s lower division.
On the international stage, Viñas has earned fourteen caps for Uruguay, scoring twice. His contributions include starting the first two World Cup matches before being used as a substitute against Spain.
In the knockout phase against Spain, Viñas entered the field for 33 minutes as a replacement. The limited playing time underscores the challenge he faces to secure regular minutes at the highest level.
