Ajax's pursuit of Dani Ceballos meets Spanish heavyweight challenge
Ajax’s bid for 29‑year‑old Spanish midfielder Dani Ceballos has been joined by Atlético Madrid, while Real Betis also remains in contention, as the free‑agent seeks a new club after his Real Madrid contract was terminated. The 29‑year‑old playmaker earned roughly five million euros gross in his last deal with Real Madrid.
Ceballos, a 29‑year‑old playmaker and thirteen‑time Spanish international, became a free agent when his contract with Real Madrid was dissolved. His availability has attracted interest from several clubs across Europe.
Real Betis, the club from Seville, initially hesitated over the financial outlay required for Ceballos, but his free‑transfer status removes that barrier. The Andalusian side also recently transferred Sergi Altimara to Sporting Portugal, signalling its willingness to reshape the squad.
Atlético Madrid, a La Liga heavyweight, has entered the race, contemplating a signing that would intensify the rivalry with Real Madrid. A move to the club would be considered a striking switch given the historic competition between the two Spanish giants.
In Amsterdam, Ajax coach Míchel is reportedly advocating strongly for the midfielder’s arrival. “Undoubtedly various aspects will be decisive in the final decision. On one hand there is the sporting project, but also the salary they can offer the player. He earned gross about five million euros with his last contract at Real Madrid,” Míchel said.
All three clubs remain in contention, with the final decision expected to hinge on the sporting project and the salary package each can propose. Ceballos’s next destination will be decided once the offers are compared and the player’s preferences are clarified.
