Allegri explains the misunderstanding with Kevin De Bruyne

Massimiliano Allegri said at a press conference that the recent dispute with Kevin De Bruyne was “just a misunderstanding on the pitch”, thus dispelling rumours of an open conflict between Napoli’s coach and the 35‑year‑old Belgian midfielder.

Origin of the dispute

The discomfort is said to have arisen from instructions from the Napoli coach that were not understood – or not appreciated – by the Red Devil. During the Champions League match against Villarreal, De Bruyne was seen making big gestures to teammates, apparently ignoring Allegri’s instructions.

This type of tension is not new: under Pep Guardiola, then Manchester City manager, the Belgian has already had several heated exchanges with the English manager. Domenico Tedesco, former Belgian national team coach, recalled that De Bruyne, usual captain of the Red Devils, has sometimes reacted sharply after under‑performances for the national team.

Current situation of Napoli

Allegri reminded that Napoli currently sits in eighth place in Serie A and has lost its first two Champions League matches, a start to the season far from the club’s expectations. Nevertheless, he emphasized that De Bruyne remains in form and under the watchful eye of the Italian media.

The coach also mentioned the possible benching of Rasmus Hojlund for the trip to Venice, explaining that the Dane has “played many matches” and may need rest. Allegri said he will decide between Lucca and Hojlund during the day’s training.

Furthermore, Allegri mentioned the upcoming availability of Anguissa, Olivera and Alisson, while acknowledging that Neres remains unavailable due to recurring injuries. He added that McTominay and other players need to regain their physical condition.

The club recently beat Frosinone in Serie A, but the loss to Villarreal heightened the focus on every incident. Allegri concluded that misunderstandings are part of the game and that mutual understanding, even with the language barrier, remains essential.
