Amedspor takes the top spot: Orban blocks Italiano's Besiktas

Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic found the net, but Vincenzo Italiano's Besiktas was defeated 3-2 by Amedspor, thus losing the chance to overtake Galatasaray and seeing the top spot go to Gift Orban.

A European win that sparks hope

Only a few days earlier Besiktas celebrated the victory in the first Europa League match against Marseille, with the Turkish crowd chanting for coach Vincenzo Italiano. The Istanbul event was supposed to confirm that form, with the aim of beating Amedspor and overtaking Galatasaray, but it ended in vain.

Galatasaray, despite having accumulated 13 points, had been overwhelmed by Trabzonspor, leaving the club vulnerable in the title race.

Match report

Gift Orban, former Verona player, opened the scoring at 13' and set up Saba at 22', putting Amedspor ahead 2-0. Vlahovic, former Juventus player, gave Besiktas hope at 55', but Soyalp equalised at 59' with a goal that settled the score at 3-2.

At 84' defender Cisse was sent off; in the end, Kokcu converted a penalty at 98', but time was already up.

Coach Italiano, former Bologna and Fiorentina manager, saw his plan to leap to the top of the table shattered, despite the squad featuring former Juventus, Verona and Fiorentina players such as Lafont, former Fiorentina goalkeeper.

With the win, Amedspor reaches 13 points, equal to Galatasaray (4 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss). Besiktas remains on 12 points, one point behind the top two.

The table now shows: 1st Amedspor 13 (6), 2nd Galatasaray 13 (6), 3rd Besiktas 12 (6), followed by Kocaelispor, Alanyaspor and others. The upcoming matches will be decisive for who will manage to claim the top spot in the Super Lig.
