Anderlecht eyeing Swedish defender Eric Smith amid foreign interest

RSC Anderlecht have been linked with a move for 29‑year‑old Swedish centre‑back Eric Smith, according to the Hamburger Abendblatt, as the club intensifies its search for a defensive reinforcement this summer. The 1.92‑metre defender, currently under contract with St. Pauli until June 2027, is seen as a potential long‑term solution.

Smith, who stands 1.92 metres tall, can operate centrally and brings considerable experience to the table. His current deal with St. Pauli runs to June 2027, meaning any transfer would require a financial outlay.

Transfermarkt estimates Smith’s market value at €5 million. Such a fee would represent a modest investment for a club of Anderlecht’s stature.

Smith’s familiarity with Belgian football stems from his brief spell at KAA Gent in 2018, after leaving IFK Norrköping. He made only three appearances for the Buffalo’s before being loaned to Tromsø, Norrköping and later St. Pauli.

St. Pauli secured Smith on a permanent basis in 2021, and he has since amassed 146 appearances for the German side. His consistency has made him a regular fixture in the squad.

Internationally, Smith debuted for Sweden in June 2026 and was named in the World Cup squad, although he did not feature on the pitch. He remained on the bench for four matches during the tournament.

Beyond Anderlecht, clubs such as Bologna, Burnley and Birmingham City have also been reported to monitor Smith, though no formal bids have materialised yet. The competition from Italy and England could complicate Anderlecht’s pursuit.

Anderlecht will need to navigate this interest and decide whether to activate the Smith dossier this summer. The outcome will shape the club’s defensive options for the upcoming season.
