Atletico Madrid eyes defender exits including Giménez
Sporting director Mateu Alemany is preparing a difficult summer of squad restructuring for Atletico Madrid. He has described the upcoming defender departures as a ‘painful sale’. Club captain José María Giménez is among the players likely to be moved on.
Atletico Madrid conceded 81 goals in all competitions last season. In La Liga alone the side allowed 44 goals. The defensive record has been identified as the priority area for investment.
Cuti Romero is understood to be Alemany’s top defensive target. The club has also opened talks for at least one midfield addition.
David Hancko and Marc Pubill are expected to start in central defence. Robin Le Normand is pencilled in as a rotation option. Only three of Atletico’s five senior centre-backs have guaranteed continuity heading into next season. Clément Lenglet and José María Giménez are the two most likely to depart.
Lenglet, acquired for €3m, struggled after his first loan season and is viewed as a straightforward exit. Giménez’s form has dipped due to injuries and he has fallen out of favour with coach Diego Simeone. Reports of friction between Giménez and Simeone suggest a significant offer would be seriously considered. Selling the captain would provide needed wage clearance and transfer income before the August 31 window closes.
