Backlash erupts as Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham slaps opponent

The post‑match assault by Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has ignited a firestorm of criticism, putting the Argentine‑born star under intense scrutiny as the football world reacts to his violent slap on Albacete defender Valentin Barco after Argentina’s win over England.

The controversy erupted when, after the final whistle, Bellingham struck Barco on the head. The violent act immediately drew backlash from fans and players on the pitch.

The slap came moments after Argentina’s dramatic equaliser against England, which prompted jubilant celebrations from the Argentine contingent on the field. The equaliser had reignited the match before the final whistle.

While the crowd cheered, Bellingham, reeling from England’s shocking elimination, remained visibly upset. He was described as gutted after the defeat.

Barco, the Albacete defender, deliberately celebrated the Argentine equaliser directly in front of Bellingham’s face, a gesture that provoked the Real Madrid star’s angry response. Bellingham later defended his action, saying the slap was a reaction to Barco’s pointed celebration.

Barco’s wife, Yaz Juareguy, posted on social media condemning the midfielder’s actions with the comment, “It’s better to talk on the field.” She later removed the post and replaced it with a second message criticizing Bellingham’s behaviour and suggesting he should pursue another sport.
