Barcelona's Gaudi-inspired kit clashes with La Liga's font rule

🇪🇸

FC Barcelona has unveiled its 2026‑27 home shirt, a design steeped in Catalan heritage that honours architect Antoni Gaudi on the centenary of his death, but La Liga will prohibit the use of its distinctive FC Barcelona Modernista typeface in league matches.

The kit incorporates modernist details inspired by Antoni Gaudi, reflecting the legendary Catalan architect’s style. These elements were chosen to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gaudi’s death.

A new typeface called FC Barcelona Modernista will appear on player names and numbers. The font aligns with the club’s ‘Mes Que un Club’ tagline, reinforcing its identity.

La Liga regulations require all clubs to use a single official typography for names and numbers during domestic league fixtures. The rule aims to ensure visual consistency and easy readability for television broadcasts.

Consequently, Barcelona can only apply the Modernista lettering in competitions governed by UEFA and the Royal Spanish Football Federation, such as the Champions League, Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup. In La Liga matches the club must revert to the league‑mandated font.

This is not the first clash; last season Barcelona also featured different typography between La Liga and European competition. A separate issue arose with the third kit, where the league rejected the colour contrast of names and numbers.

Despite the typographic limitation, the kit has recorded strong sales, featuring the Midea logo on the sleeve for the first time. The Barça Foundation logo also appears, and the club acknowledges it will have to navigate the font restriction as an acceptable compromise.
