Barnsley's loan of Ipswich Cieran Slicker to fill Championship gap

Barnsley have secured a season‑long loan for 23‑year‑old Scotland international Cieran Slicker from Ipswich Town, bringing the goalkeeper into the Championship side to address a shortage of senior options between the posts as the new campaign approaches, and to compete for the starting spot.

Barnsley’s decision was driven by Slicker’s 43 appearances in League Two for Barnet last season, which the club viewed as proof of his ability to step up. The performances suggested he could handle the higher demands of the Championship.

During the 2025‑26 season Slicker remained on loan at Barnet, adding a further 44 appearances for the Bees in League Two and earning recognition across the division for his consistency. Those displays reinforced Barnsley’s belief in his readiness.

Slicker progressed through Manchester City’s academy before signing for Ipswich Town in July 2023. Since joining the Bees he has featured three times, offering a glimpse of his potential at a higher level.

"After last year, the next step was key for me, and I think this is the perfect step," Slicker said on the club website, expressing confidence that regular minutes at Barnsley will aid his development.

Season‑long loans are a common route for young goalkeepers to gain experience in higher leagues, and Barnsley continues to use such deals to strengthen its roster while managing finances. The arrangement allows the club to fill an immediate need without committing to a permanent transfer fee.

All paperwork was completed in July 2026, finalising the loan and enabling Slicker to integrate during pre‑season. Barnsley’s manager expects the goalkeeper to challenge for the starting role as the Championship campaign begins.
