Belgian FA raises alarm over FIFA's handling of Balogun case
The Belgian Football Association (KBVB) issued a new statement today expressing serious concerns about FIFA’s handling after the governing body lifted the automatic suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun, and announced it will formally contest his eligibility for the upcoming match.
KBVB says the player’s eligibility is now formally disputed and that the federation’s ethical standards demand a transparent process. The association warned that the lack of clarity could affect the integrity of the competition.
KBVB wrote to FIFA requesting a copy of the decision, an explanation of the procedure followed, and clarification of its position on the relevant regulations. The letter was sent after the federation learned of the suspension lift through media reports.
FIFA replied only with a letter stating that the KBVB’s reaction was considered an appeal. An arbitrator was appointed and the Belgian side was given only a few hours to complete the appeal in full.
KBVB received no substantive information from FIFA. FIFA’s own regulations require a reasoned decision to be communicated before an appeal can be admissible. Yet FIFA turned the request for clarification into an appeal and immediately declared it inadmissible, while also refusing to answer what KBVB described as completely legitimate information requests.
The federation also raised concerns about FIFA’s conduct during the match coordination meeting, where the agenda item on automatic suspension was deliberately removed. That topic had been included in the meetings for the previous four matches Belgium played.
To date, KBVB has not received any decision or clarification from FIFA regarding the matter. Consequently, the association feels compelled to formally challenge Balogun’s eligibility for the forthcoming fixture.
KBVB affirmed it will continue to defend the principles of ethics, fair competition, and the broader interests of football in the coming hours, days and months. The federation indicated its commitment to pursue the issue through all available channels.
