Besiktas dominates Hoffenheim and strengthens European campaign
Besiktas secured a convincing 2-3 victory over TSG Hoffenheim on Thursday evening in the competitive phase of the Europa League, giving the Turkish club its second win of the season.
Match progression and key players
The South Korean striker Oh Hyeon-gyu was the standout for Besiktas, scoring twice and thereby deciding the final result. In the first half the game remained fairly even, but in the third minute Koki Machida headed the ball onto the post, an early sign of the tension.
After an hour of play Michael Murillo gave the visitors the lead (0-1). Fisnik Asllani equalised to 1-1, after which Oh Hyeon-gyu, via a deep ball, put the home side back in front (1-2). A low cross from Ilhan Fakili led to the third goal (1-3) and Koki Machida provided a header for Hoffenheim's final goal (2-3).
Wouter Burger started for Hoffenheim, while Orkun Kökçü came off the bench for Besiktas. Both teams had a Dutch player on the bench: Mats Rots for Hoffenheim and Ernest Poku for Besiktas. Last month Besiktas beat Olympique Marseille at home (4-1) and Hoffenheim lost to OFI Crete (0-2).
