Bordeaux on the brink: National survival versus Régional relegation and bankruptcy risk as the club fights for its future

In the quiet of the Stade Matmut‑Atlantique, Bordeaux officials stare at a looming deadline, aware that the club’s fate hangs between staying in National 1 and a drop to Régional 1, a battle that could decide the future of the historic side.

The DNCG administratively relegated the Girondins de Bordeaux to Régional 1 on 15 July. The decision moved the club from the fourth tier, National 1, to the sixth level of French football.

Tribunal verdict awaited

Le tribunal administratif de Paris will deliver its verdict on Friday at 18 hours, following a Thursday afternoon hearing with the club and its lawyers. The announcement was posted on BordeauxAujourd'hui at 09h36. The club hopes the ruling will preserve its place in National 1.

Bordeaux spent the previous season competing in National 1, the fourth division of the French league system. A further drop to Régional 1 would place the side at the sixth level, a steep decline for a six‑time French champion.

The CNOSF recently upheld the DNCG’s exclusion of Bordeaux from the national championships. The French Football Federation then chose to take no action, effectively closing the door on a national‑level stay.

Sparta Capital and other new investors have asked the tribunal to suspend the DNCG’s July 15 decision and the CNOSF’s proposal. Their aim is to force a re‑examination of Bordeaux’s dossier by the DNCG.

If the club secures a stay in National 1, it avoids another administrative relegation and the looming threat of a definitive bankruptcy filing. The outcome on Friday will determine whether Bordeaux can rebuild or faces a deeper crisis.
