Botofago bets on Danilo to revive attack with conditional loan

Botofago, sitting ninth after 19 matches in the 2026 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, have identified a need to sharpen their attack and have secured a year‑long loan for 27‑year‑old Brazilian forward Danilo, hoping the addition will lift them from mid‑table.

The Rio de Janeiro side view Danilo as a solution to a scoring gap that has persisted this season. Their ninth‑place standing underscores the urgency to add proven firepower as they aim for a higher finish.

The agreement runs for one year and includes a conditional obligation to buy, meaning Botofago must purchase Danilo if specific criteria are met. Rangers describe the deal as a conditional obligation to buy, confirming the clause will trigger a permanent transfer under agreed conditions.

Danilo’s move follows a season‑long struggle for playing time at Rangers. He fell out of head coach Danny Rohl’s plans last season, prompting a loan to Dutch side Nijmegen where he made 12 appearances and scored once.

The arrival of new Rangers manager Derek McInnes has left Danilo further on the sidelines, confirming he is not in the squad’s future plans. Consequently, the striker left the Ibrox club to re‑join his native Brazil.

During six seasons in the Netherlands, Danilo won two Dutch league titles and one Dutch Cup with Ajax, then added a league crown with Feyenoord before moving to Rangers in 2023. He helped Rangers capture the Scottish League Cup in his first season, but managed just four goals in 28 appearances during the first half of the current campaign, totaling 16 goals in 77 games for the Glasgow club.

Both clubs confirmed the arrangement will see the Brazilian forward return to Brazil for the 2026 season. The conditional obligation means Botofago must finalize the purchase if the agreed performance triggers are reached, sealing the deal beyond the loan term.
